What’s new in the Canada Flood Model
One 10-meter terrain model for all of Canada. High-resolution lidar where it exists (about 95 percent of populated areas), enhanced global elevation data everywhere else, brought together into a single, continuous surface and refined with machine learning.
Sharper rivers and floodplains. Cleaned of noise, vegetation, and buildings, so the model sees bare earth and routes water the way it actually flows.
Better in hard terrain. An updated physics engine that performs in mountainous and steep areas, where flood modeling is hardest.
Defenses that reflect reality. Refreshed flood defense data, including major infrastructure like the Red River Floodway and Springbank Off-stream Reservoir.
